Winter Solstice: Sun Salutation Practice

108 Sun Salutations is definitely challenging, but rewarding in many ways. This practice will show you that you have the power to release anything holding you back. Sun Salutations generate heat in the body. This movement of energy helps move stuck emotions manifesting in your current physical, mental, spiritual being. Each person will experience the activation and release of emotions and sensations differently. However, everyone who participates in this experience will enter a process of deep change and growth when surrendering to the power of this ancient ritual.

Practicing 108 Sun Salutations is an important tradition to honour the change of the seasons. However, you can practice Sun Salutations any time and with any frequency to feel more grounded and connected to the earth. In the Spring, the Equinox represents a time of new beginnings, making it a great time to clear the body of the old to make space for the new. The Summer Solstice is a time of celebration, where many cultures have festivals to rejoice the sun and its life-giving energy. In the Fall, the Equinox offers a time to go within, to feel supported, and prepare for the upcoming season and the Winter Solstice symbolizes death and rebirth.

Releasing negative energy trapped in the body is an important step on your path to happiness. You will be surprised at your strength and how many rounds you can do as you enter a trance like state and flow. Focusing on positivity or on a specific mantra as you practice has the power to transform your entire outlook and focus your intention. It is important to listen to your body and modify poses as needed. This is a heart-centered practice. Do not be fooled by your ego. Remember to continue your deep, conscious breathing and stop as needed. Start with one Sun Salutation and keep going into the flow of your body.

The number 108 is sacred and significant in many ways, appearing in many disciplines from astronomy to yoga. In numerology 108 equals 9, which symbolizes universal love, eternity and awakening. In Ayurveda there are 108 sacred points on the body. In astronomy the distance between the Sun and Earth is roughly 108 times the Sun’s diameter.
