Medicine for Your Winter Blahs

The leaves have all fallen to the ground and we have begun to have the occasional sprinkling of snow. It is at this time of year that I usually begin to hear people begin to grumble about the upcoming snowy season. However, I generally become quite excited. I think that snow is a lot of fun, and South River (being in a snow belt) is a great place to be for the winter months.

For those of you that are dreading the cold season there are a variety of activities I believe are the remedy to curing your winter blahs. Our area boasts a host of great activities such as dog sledding, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and hockey. These exhilarating activities not only allow you to enjoy winter but help you to keep from putting on ‘winter weight’. I have also heard that keeping active in the winter also helps you to maintain a healthy immune system and therefore increase your ability to fight off colds and flus. Now that I am working in the office regularly I have personally vowed to strap on my headlamp and snowshoe or ski under the stars at least 3 times a week.

So don’t dread the upcoming season, embrace it- begin planning to take part in winter activities or plan a winter retreat.
