Grand Child of the Drum

By Doug Mannen (CCSS Collective Circle Member)

“Dedicated to all the beautiful children I have drummed with.”

Her inquisitive, brown eyes had watched me attentively for ten minutes while I had explained, to her Kindergarten class, some of my teachings about what a hand drum means to me, how to treat it with respect and lastly how to care for it. She had especially loved the part when I called the drum in my hands, my Grandmother; she had moved closer to me, her desire to reach out and touch the drum pouring from her. Her classmates were no different; all seemed spellbound by my words, yet bursting with excitement to play! How wonderfully patient they were.

As I brought out the other drums from the large carrying bag and unwrapped each one I was paused by a curious voice. “Why does each drum have its own blanket?” The teacher hushed the child, explaining how impolite it was to interrupt our guest.
“She was correct to ask,” I stated, smiling at her and the young girl in front of me. Her brown eyes sparkled with delight. ”I should have explained that information before.” There is always so much to learn from the little ones.

Home Practice

During an outing – a walk, a grocery shop, or strolling in a park, become aware of a child. Observe the youngster. With the inner hearing of your heart, listen to any message you may receive and allow it to guide you into a special memory of your childhood.

▪ What communication do you receive connected to this memory?
▪ Why do you still hold that memory?
▪ How has your childhood memory affected your thoughts, feelings or actions to this point in your life?
▪ How can this special moment from your past guide you in the present as you connect with others?

Share your home practice findings with others on Peace Villages!

Cedar Song

By Michelle Girouard & accompanied by Gwenith Kikkawa (CCSS Collective Circle Members)

“The cedar song belongs to both my ancestors and ascendants. It calls me closer to uncovering my lineage, and was my baby’s birthday song years before she was physically born. The song is a working song that accompanies as we tend to the garden of our soul’s unfolding. It braids together the life forces of the maiden, the mother, and the crone. Leading me home…”
