The Magic Eagle Song

By Katie Lucier

Katie: “On grandpa’s birthday I was sitting on the couch with my grandma, and I wanted to sing my grandma a eagle song I learned from my after school substitute teacher and I sung it to my grandma, and I said I don’t think that’s it but that’s my best of trying to remember. And then she said, I know an eagle song I learned from Gwenith, and she sung it to me and I really liked it, and I wanted to play a book game and grandma started and thought of a word, she chose the word tree and I said hmmmm I can’t think of anything that sounds right now it’s my turn to think of a word. I said oh eagle, oh eagle flying around my rainbow, it interested me with Gwenith’s song you sung to me, and  then I said it’s your turn now and you can think of a word, and she said oh eagle, oh eagle flying around the sun, now it’s my turn, and I said oh eagle, oh eagle want to have some fun, and then she said in the sunlight, in the moonlight, in the starlight tonight, and I said later in the day, do you want to play, then that was the end. Then a few weeks later I thought of the ending and then one day we went to the Edge and at nighttime right before dinner Alistair said James needs a new song for bedtime because I only sing songs like this, “daddy and James swimming in the sea…”, and then my mom said you should use Katie’s song. Then I went to the office a few days later then Gwen wanted a recording of it, I showed Gwen and she got a copy of it, and then a few days later then that she copied the magic eagle that my mom copied for me, and then I went to a kirtan concert with Gwen, Luna and Kevin and after the kirtan and I gave the eagle song to Brenda McMorrow because I brought it with me, and then I did, and then I got a CD with my $20, and I got her a hair comment, and then I left.”

Oh eagle, oh eagle
Flying around my rainbow
Oh eagle, oh eagle
Flying around the sun
Oh eagle, oh eagle
Want to have some fun, in the sunlight, in the moonlight, in the starlight
Tonight, and later in the day
Do you want to play?

Oh, yes I do!
Through my heart and through my soul
Tonight is my goal to catch up with my soul
Oh yes, yes, yes, to catch up with my soul…

“Tonight is my goal to catch up with my soul” … this is a keeper, now written in my spirit journal. What a wonderful last moment of being awake before sleep.
